Montreux is one of my favorite places in Switzerland, and after visiting in both summer and at Christmas, I can completely understand why so many people choose to include it in their Switzerland itinerary. Sitting on the shores of Lake Geneva, surrounded by mountains and connected to some of the country’s most beautiful train journeys, it’s a lovely destination for a night or two.
But deciding where to stay in Montreux isn’t quite as straightforward as it might first appear. There are beautiful luxury hotels overlooking the lake, more affordable options away from the center, and smaller neighborhoods that can be just as appealing depending on the kind of trip you’re planning. Switzerland is also an expensive country for accommodation, so choosing the right location can make a noticeable difference to the overall cost.
On my own trip, I was traveling solo and stayed at Montreux Youth Hostel, which turned out to be a really good choice. It had a lovely lakeside setting, clean bathrooms, space for my luggage and breakfast included, which I particularly appreciated given the cost of eating out in Switzerland. I’ve also looked at the hotels I’d consider for a return visit as a couple, including a central lakeside property and one of Montreux’s best-known luxury hotels.
This guide covers the best areas to stay in Montreux, three accommodation recommendations for different budgets and the practical things I’d consider before booking, particularly if you’re traveling around Switzerland by train.

Best Areas to Stay in Montreux, Switzerland
Montreux stretches along the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva, with the main train station and town center sitting above part of the waterfront. It isn’t an enormous destination, but accommodation can be spread out along the lake or higher up the hillside, so it’s worth checking the location carefully before booking.
For a first visit, I’d generally look for somewhere close to the lake and within easy reach of a train station or bus stop. I’ve always enjoyed exploring Switzerland without a car, and Montreux is particularly convenient for that kind of trip.
1. Montreux Town Center: Best for First-Time Visitors
If this is a first trip to Montreux, the town center is probably the easiest place to stay. It’s where you’ll find the main railway station, shops, restaurants and convenient access to the lakefront promenade. It’s also a particularly good base if Montreux is part of a longer Switzerland itinerary and you’re only planning to stay for one or two nights.
Being close to the station is especially useful if you’re arriving from Geneva or continuing towards Interlaken on the GoldenPass Express. I’d check the actual walking route before booking, though, because Montreux is built on a slope and some hotels involve steps or steep streets between the station and the waterfront. That might not matter with a backpack, but it can make a difference when traveling with larger suitcases.
Best for: First-time visitors, short stays, train travel and easy access to restaurants and attractions.
2. The Lakefront Promenade: Best for Views and Atmosphere
For me, the lakefront is what makes Montreux special. I’ve visited in summer when the flowers were out and the water was a beautiful shade of blue, and again in winter when the Christmas market transformed parts of the promenade. The scenery is lovely in both seasons, and it’s somewhere I could quite happily spend an afternoon walking and stopping for photographs.
Choosing accommodation along the promenade means having those views on your doorstep. There are grand historic hotels and modern lakeside properties, many within easy reach of restaurants and boat departures. The trade-off is cost, particularly for rooms with balconies or full lake views. I’d check exactly what’s included in the room description, because a partial lake view is not quite the same as waking up to a panoramic view of Lake Geneva.
Best for: Couples, lake views, special occasions and visitors wanting to enjoy the atmosphere of Montreux.
3. Territet: Best for a Quieter and More Affordable Stay
Territet is the area I’d particularly recommend considering if you’re trying to keep accommodation costs down without giving up the beautiful lakeside setting. It’s farther along Lake Geneva from central Montreux, in the direction of Chillon Castle, and has its own railway station and local transport connections.
This is where I stayed at Montreux Youth Hostel during my solo trip. I loved being close to the lake, and the location suited the way I wanted to explore. I was happy to walk rather than stay right in the middle of town, and having the waterfront nearby made the accommodation feel much more appealing than the word hostel might suggest.
I’d check the location against Territet station as well as the main Montreux station, because the closer stop will depend on the property. Accommodation in this area can also sit near the railway line, so it’s worth reading recent reviews if you’re particularly sensitive to noise.
Best for: Budget-conscious travelers, solo trips and visitors happy to stay a little outside the center.
4. Clarens: Best for Families and Longer Stays
Clarens sits along the lake to the west of central Montreux and is another area worth considering if you want somewhere more residential than the main tourist center. It has local restaurants, residential streets and access to the waterfront, with Montreux itself reachable by public transportation or a longer walk.
For a longer stay, especially with children, I’d compare apartments in Clarens with hotels in central Montreux. Having additional space and somewhere to prepare simple meals can be useful in Switzerland, where eating out every day quickly adds to the budget. For a single overnight stop before catching an early train, though, I’d probably prioritize somewhere closer to Montreux station.
Best for: Families, apartment stays and visitors wanting a quieter base.
5. Vevey: An Alternative to Staying in Montreux
Vevey isn’t actually part of Montreux, but it’s close enough that I’d include it when comparing accommodation. It’s another attractive town on Lake Geneva, with its own railway station, restaurants and waterfront attractions. Trains between Vevey and Montreux take only a short time, so staying in one and visiting the other is straightforward.
I’d consider Vevey if accommodation in Montreux was particularly expensive or fully booked during a major event. However, if the main reason for visiting is the Christmas market or an evening at the Jazz Festival, staying in Montreux itself is more convenient because you can walk back to your hotel instead of planning a return journey.
Best for: Comparing accommodation prices and exploring more of the Lake Geneva region.
Best Places to Stay in Montreux: 3 Options for Different Budgets
I’ve kept this list to three accommodation options rather than recommending every hotel in town. They cover very different budgets and travel styles, and each has a reason to consider it. Montreux Youth Hostel is the one I can talk about from personal experience, while MONA and Fairmont are hotels I’d compare for a more comfortable or luxurious return visit.
1. Montreux Youth Hostel: Best Budget Accommodation (Where I Stayed)
Location: Territet, near Lake Geneva
Best for: Solo travelers, budget-conscious visitors and families comfortable with hostel accommodation
My experience: Personally stayed here while traveling solo
Standout feature: Lakeside setting and included breakfast
When I visited Montreux on my own, I chose Montreux Youth Hostel, and I was really pleased with it. Switzerland isn’t generally a cheap place to stay, particularly when you’re traveling solo and don’t have anyone to split the accommodation cost with, so finding somewhere affordable without sacrificing the location was important.
The first thing I loved was the setting. The hostel is in Territet, close to the shores of Lake Geneva, and it’s a lovely place to be based. I could walk along the waterfront and enjoy the scenery without needing to pay for a hotel room overlooking the lake. It was also walkable from the station, which suited me because I was getting around Switzerland by public transportation rather than renting a car.
I found the bathrooms clean, and there was space for my luggage, both of which are things I appreciate when staying somewhere budget-friendly. A hostel doesn’t need luxury extras for me to be happy with it, but it does need to be clean and practical. This one delivered on those things during my stay, and I felt I’d made a good choice rather than simply settling for the cheapest place I could find.
Another major plus was that breakfast was included. That might not sound particularly exciting, but in Switzerland even a fairly simple breakfast bought separately can add to the daily budget. Knowing I could start the morning without needing to find a café and pay extra made a genuine difference to the value of the stay. I think that’s something worth considering when comparing accommodation prices, because the cheapest room rate isn’t necessarily the cheapest overall option.
Montreux Youth Hostel isn’t limited to travelers staying in shared dormitories. The property also advertises private rooms and family accommodation, although the exact bathroom arrangements vary by room type. That makes it worth checking even if sharing a dormitory isn’t appealing. Bed linen is included, but I’d check whether towels are provided with the particular room being booked.
The main compromise is that you’re not in the center of Montreux, and the railway runs close to the property. Anyone wanting a full-service hotel, a guaranteed private bathroom or complete peace and quiet may prefer somewhere else. I’d also check the hostel’s seasonal opening dates, as it doesn’t necessarily operate every day of the year.
For a solo trip like mine, though, it was a good decision. The lakefront location felt special, the facilities were practical, and I was pleased not to be spending a fortune on accommodation when there was so much of Switzerland I wanted to explore. I’d happily consider staying here again.

2. MONA Montreux: Best for a Central Lakeside Stay
Location: Central Montreux, beside Lake Geneva
Best for: Couples, first-time visitors and train travelers
Hotel style: Modern four-star superior hotel
Standout feature: Lake views and a short walk from Montreux station
If I was returning to Montreux with my husband and wanted something more comfortable than a hostel, MONA Montreux would be one of the first hotels I’d compare. It’s located directly beside Lake Geneva and close to the main train station, making it particularly convenient for the kind of Switzerland trips I enjoy planning.
The hotel has a very different feel from the historic properties Montreux is famous for. It’s a modern, high-rise hotel with rooms designed to make the most of the lake and mountain views. Accommodation ranges from more compact rooms to larger options and suites, with balconies and different views available depending on the category. I’d look carefully at those differences before booking because a partial lake view isn’t quite the same as having a balcony overlooking the water.
One reason I like the location is that MONA is approximately a five-minute walk from Montreux station. That’s useful if you’re arriving from Geneva Airport or continuing to Interlaken on the GoldenPass Express. The waterfront is below the station, so there’s a staircase on the direct route, but the hotel also explains how to use a nearby elevator route if you’re carrying luggage. It’s the sort of practical detail I always check when planning a trip without a car.
MONA also has restaurants and wellness facilities, which could be lovely during a longer stay or a trip as a couple. I’d compare the total room price carefully, though, because breakfast isn’t automatically included in every rate, and upgrading for a better view can increase the cost considerably. For a short visit, I’d probably focus on finding a comfortable room in a convenient location rather than paying for every available extra.
I haven’t stayed at MONA myself, so this isn’t a personal hotel review. Based on its location and facilities, however, I think it’s a strong option for anyone wanting to enjoy the lakefront while remaining close to the trains and town center.

3. Fairmont Le Montreux Palace: Best Luxury Hotel
Location: Central Montreux, overlooking Lake Geneva
Best for: Luxury breaks, special occasions and couples
Hotel style: Historic five-star Belle Époque hotel
Standout feature: Grand architecture, spa facilities and lake views
For anyone planning a special occasion or wanting to experience Montreux in a more luxurious way, Fairmont Le Montreux Palace is one of the town’s most recognizable hotels. Dating back to 1906, it’s a grand Belle Époque property that feels very much part of the Swiss Riviera’s history, with elegant architecture and a setting overlooking Lake Geneva and the surrounding mountains.
This is somewhere I’d consider for a completely different kind of trip from the one I took while traveling solo. Rather than using the accommodation mainly as a place to sleep between train journeys, Fairmont is the sort of hotel where the stay itself could be part of the experience. With restaurants, a large spa, indoor and outdoor pools and lake-view rooms, there’s plenty to enjoy without leaving the property.
The location is convenient too. The hotel is approximately 400 meters from Montreux train station and is close to the waterfront promenade, making it easy to explore central Montreux without a car. I think it could be particularly appealing for a luxury break that also includes a scenic rail journey, or for a winter stay during the Christmas market.
One thing I’d check carefully is the room category. The hotel has both city-facing and lake-facing accommodation, and there’s likely to be a noticeable difference in price. If the view is the main reason for choosing a luxury hotel, I’d make sure the booking actually includes it rather than assuming every room overlooks the lake.
I’ve not stayed at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, so this is a researched recommendation rather than a personal review. For travelers who have room in their Switzerland budget for a memorable hotel experience, it’s certainly worth comparing.

Where Should You Stay in Montreux for Your Type of Trip?
The best accommodation choice really comes down to the kind of visit you’re planning. For a one-night stop before catching a scenic train, I’d prioritize somewhere close to Montreux station. For a couple spending several days beside Lake Geneva, a lakeside hotel with a balcony or beautiful view might be worth the extra cost. And for a longer family stay, I’d compare apartments in Clarens or Territet with central hotel rooms, particularly if having extra space and somewhere to prepare meals is important.
For solo travelers, my own experience at Montreux Youth Hostel is a good example of how choosing accommodation outside the main center can keep costs manageable without missing out on the scenery. I was happy to walk and use public transportation, but I’d choose differently if I was arriving late at night with several large suitcases. It’s worth thinking about what will make the trip most convenient rather than choosing accommodation on price alone.
Is Accommodation in Montreux Expensive?
Switzerland has a reputation for being expensive, and accommodation in Montreux is no exception. There are ways to manage the cost, particularly by choosing a hostel, comparing different neighborhoods or staying outside the busiest travel periods, but I wouldn’t approach Montreux expecting the same hotel prices as many other European destinations.
Rather than quoting fixed nightly prices that could be completely different by the time you travel, I’d compare hotels using the total cost for the actual dates. A room that looks affordable at first can become more expensive once breakfast, local taxes or room upgrades are added. For visitors coming from the United States, remember that Swiss accommodation is generally priced in Swiss francs, so the amount charged in dollars will depend on the exchange rate and payment provider.
For me, breakfast is one of the first things worth checking. Having it included at Montreux Youth Hostel was a genuine advantage, and it made the accommodation feel better value. If comparing two hotels with similar room prices, I’d work out what breakfast is likely to cost separately before deciding which is actually cheaper.
I’d also be realistic about paying extra for a lake view. Montreux has a beautiful public promenade where you can enjoy the scenery for free, so on a short trip I wouldn’t feel I had to pay substantially more for a room overlooking the water. For an anniversary or a special occasion, however, I can understand why that might be worth the extra cost.
When Is the Best Time to Book Hotels in Montreux?
I’d be particularly careful with accommodation dates if visiting during the Montreux Jazz Festival in July or the Christmas market in November and December. Both attract visitors to the town, and popular central hotels can become more expensive or sell out. If the trip revolves around one of those events, I’d compare accommodation availability before finalizing flights or the wider Switzerland itinerary.
Summer is also a popular time for exploring Lake Geneva and traveling on the panoramic trains, so I wouldn’t assume there will always be reasonably priced last-minute rooms available. I’d compare a few date combinations if possible and pay attention to cancellation policies, especially when booking several months ahead. For budget accommodation, it’s also worth checking seasonal opening dates because some hostels don’t operate throughout the year.
Staying in Montreux Without a Car
Montreux is well suited to exploring without a rental car, and I’ve always enjoyed using Switzerland’s public transportation network. The main railway station provides connections towards Geneva and the rest of Switzerland, as well as the GoldenPass scenic trains. Local buses and smaller stations, including Territet and Clarens, are useful for accommodation outside the main center.
When choosing a hotel, I’d focus on the route between the property and the nearest station or bus stop. Some of Montreux’s streets are surprisingly steep, so a short distance on a map doesn’t always mean an easy walk with luggage. If you’re planning to travel onwards to Interlaken, it’s worth choosing accommodation that makes the departure straightforward.
For more ideas on exploring the town itself, take a look at my guide to the best things to do in Montreux, including Chillon Castle, the lakefront promenade, scenic train journeys and the Christmas market.
Don’t Forget the Montreux Riviera Card
Another thing worth checking when booking accommodation is whether you’ll receive the Montreux Riviera Card. Participating accommodation providers offer this guest card, which includes free travel on specified local public transportation routes and discounts at several attractions around the Swiss Riviera.
For anyone staying outside the main center, the transport benefits could be particularly useful. The card isn’t a replacement for a nationwide Swiss Travel Pass, and the exact benefits and conditions should be checked before planning around them. I’d ask the accommodation whether the card is included and how it is provided, particularly if you’re hoping to use public transportation straight after arrival.
Check the official Montreux Riviera Card information.
Frequently Asked Questions About Where to Stay in Montreux
What is the best area to stay in Montreux for the first time?
I’d choose central Montreux, ideally close to the main railway station and lakefront promenade. It’s convenient for restaurants, sightseeing and onward train travel, particularly if you’re only staying one or two nights. If accommodation in the center is too expensive, I’d also compare Territet, where I stayed on my solo trip.
Is Montreux Youth Hostel worth staying at?
Based on my own experience, yes. I was pleased with its lakeside location, clean bathrooms, luggage space and included breakfast. It’s a practical budget option rather than a luxury hotel, so I’d check the room type, bathroom arrangements and proximity to the railway before booking.
How many nights should I book in Montreux?
One night can work well if you’re using Montreux as a stop between Geneva and Interlaken, but I’d recommend two nights for a more relaxed visit. That gives time to enjoy the town and include an additional excursion such as Chillon Castle or Rochers-de-Naye. Three nights could be worthwhile if you’re planning several day trips or attending an event.
Where should I stay for the Montreux Christmas Market?
I’d look for accommodation near the central waterfront or within easy walking distance of Montreux station. That makes it convenient to enjoy the market and Flying Santa without arranging transport afterwards. Central hotels are likely to be popular during the Christmas season, so I’d compare availability early if traveling on fixed dates.
Is it worth paying extra for a lake-view hotel room?
That depends on the type of trip. For a special occasion or a relaxed break, waking up to views across Lake Geneva could be lovely. However, if you’re only staying one night and spending most of your time exploring, I wouldn’t feel it’s essential. The public promenade is beautiful, and you can enjoy the same scenery without paying extra for a lake-view room.
Where Would I Stay in Montreux Again?
I’d happily return to Montreux Youth Hostel for another budget-conscious solo trip. I enjoyed the lakeside setting, found the facilities practical and really appreciated having breakfast included. It’s a good reminder that staying somewhere affordable doesn’t necessarily mean missing out on the atmosphere of a destination, particularly when the scenery is right outside.
If I was visiting with my husband and wanted a more comfortable hotel, I’d probably compare MONA Montreux first because of its lakefront location and proximity to the railway station. For a special occasion, Fairmont Le Montreux Palace would be the luxury option I’d consider. Whichever accommodation you choose, I’d recommend staying overnight in Montreux rather than simply passing through, because it’s a lovely place to enjoy at a more relaxed pace.
